Abstract

In this project we aim to study the chemical ecology of Cerambycinae and Lamiinae (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) species in areas of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest of São Paulo State, on which it will be determined the pheromones responsible for chemical communication of native species. Initially, traps containing pheromones already identified for Cerambycinae and Lamiinae will be used to capture insects for the experiments in the two areas. Beetles of both subfamilies that were captured in the highest numbers every two weeks will be aerated and the obtained extracts will be tested by GC-EAD and analyzed by GC-MS. After the first year of project, the two most frequent/abundant species of each subfamily in each area will be selected for identification, synthesis, and field-testing of their pheromones. Pheromones of other species will be only identified. In the second year, the synthetic pheromones will be tested in the field separately, in blends or in combination with plant volatiles in the same areas of Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. This study will provide new information on chemical ecology of cerambycids of Brazil, and will support the development of new strategies of monitoring and survey of native species with a conservationist approach or for agricultural practices, as well as for quarantine inspections.
