In situ effect of a chewing gum conteining casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) previously to initial erosive challenge

Abstract

The erosive protective effect of CPP-ACP is controversial in the literature. The present research group found in a previous study that the remineralizing effect of CPP-ACP (by the use of the chewing gum after the erosive challenge), although important, was not sufficient to prevent the enamel loss by an erosive cycling (FAPESP Process 2011/16326-7). Thus, for the prevention of erosion, it was hypothesized that the inhibition of erosive demineralization has greater impact than the remineralization enhancement. To test this hypothesis, the present in situ study aim to evaluate the effect of the use of a chewing gum containing casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) previously to the initial erosive challenge. For this, 72 bovine enamel blocks will be prepared and placed in intraoral appliances, which will be used by 12 previously selected volunteers. The 3 groups under study are: GI - enamel subjected to unstimulated salivary action (control); GII - enamel subjected to conventional Trident®; and GIII - enamel subjected to Trident® Total (containing CPP-ACP). The study will include 3 crossover phases, one for each group: the appliance will be used for 12 hours before the beginning of the experiment at night, during the sleeping and for 2 hour after the breakfast and oral hygiene. On GII and GIII the volunteers will chew a unit of the corresponding chewing gum for 30 minutes and thereafter will drink 150 mL of cola drink for 5 minutes to promote initial erosion. The percentage of surface hardness loss will be the response variable and the results will be submitted to the appropriate statistical analysis, with significance level of 5%. (AU)
