Abstract

The nervous system of neonatal rats is more sensitive to injury, so that peripheral nerve axotomy leads to degeneration of spinal motor and sensory neurons. Similarly, crushing of sciatic nerve results in significant loss of motoneurons. One important question is whether there is a preferential alpha or gamma motoneuron degeneration, or even plasticity of the surviving neurons, to innervate extrafusal muscle fibers. If so, the investigation of potential alpha/gamma differentiation is of great interest. Thus, the aims of the present study are to investigate potential alpha/gamma compensatory plasticity and to quantify surviving motoneurons after fluorogold labeling. The animals will be divided into two groups: GC: Control Group- non-operated and GS: sciatic nerve crushing. The pups will be lesioned at P2 and evaluated following 2 and 4 weeks by transmission electron microscopy, for synaptic plasticity analysis; and immunohistochemistry and light microscopy for neuronal survival.
