Abstract

Purpose: Heart failure (HF) is a complex and multifactorial syndrome being the most prevalent cause of hospital admissions for cardiovascular disease. The diagnosis is associated with poor prognosis in more than 40% of cases. There is consensus in the literature that sedentary lifestyle does not improve quality of life and functional capacity of patients with HF with reduced or preserved LVEF. However, the results are controversial regarding factors associated with these beneficial effects. Some studies have pointed to the beneficial effects of physical activity on diastolic function. Given the importance of filling pressure of the left ventricle (LV) in patients with symptoms of heart failure and exercise tolerance, it is suspected that sedentary behavior exercises negative influence in diastolic function in patients with HF and reduced LVEF. Objectives: To evaluate the influence of the history of sedentary lifestyle in diastolic function and functional capacity of patients with HF and reduced LVEF. Methods: A prospective study will be performed in 40 patients with HF AND LVEF less than 50% with optimal medical therapy and no episodes of decompensation in the past three months. Sedentary scale (IPAQ) will be applied (IPAQ) in these patients. Two groups will be composed: sedentary (S) and non-sedentary (NS). Clinical assessments, 6-minute walk test and echocardiogram will be performed to assess functional capacity and diastolic function of these patients. Statistical analysis using Student t test will be performed to compare the groups in relation to diastolic function and functional capacity. Expected results: we expect worsening in diastolic function and functional capacity of patients in S group.
