Abstract

Magnetic hyperthermia is a noninvasive cancer treatment technique, based on magnetic nanoparticles exposed to an external alternating magnetic field. These particles act as heat sources for target thermal therapy, which is an alternative to surgery, and can be used when tumors are close to vital organs. The principle of magnetic hyperthermia involves the application of external alternating magnetic fields interacting with magnetic nanoparticles concentrated in the tumor region. During interaction, part of the energy is dissipated as heat, which causes local increase of temperature, destroying the tumoral tissue without damaging healthy tissue. However, to improve effectiveness in the results, it is necessary to know the magnitude of the temperature increase and also the spatial distribution of magnetic particles for the focus on tumor tissue. The aim of our study is to monitor the temperature and spatial distribution of magnetic particles using photoacoustic images. The photoacoustic signal generated from the interaction of short laser pulses with the tissue is dependent on the mechanical and thermal properties of the tissue, as its optical absorption profile, which is used for mapping temperature and spatial distribution of the particles magnetic.
