Abstract

In present FAPESP PhD project (2013/11983-5) has been studied anaerobic digestion as cattle manure methane emissions quantify way but there are emerging techniques to study anaerobic digestion, which are BEPE proposed. Anaerobic digestion (AD) is one of the promising techniques for manure treatment. Besides environmental and social gains provided by this technique, there is an economic gain through the use of renewable energy. The quality and quantity of biogas generated by Ads can affect the economic return of the investment. Co digestion is a promising technique for improving biogas production. The objectives are to improve a promising technology for cattle manure treatment which focuses on co-digestion with waste kitchen oil for higher biogas production and quality, and to analyze if there are any microbial community differences in the digestate. This study will be conducted in the Air Quality and Waste Management Laboratory of College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources of University of Missouri, under Prof. Teng Lim's supervision. Nine anaerobic digesters will be fed with beef cattle manure at 1.0 g-VS/m3/day. After stabilization, the treatment will be adding waste kitchen oil as co-digestion material. There will be three sets of laboratory-scale digesters, each has there digesters. Treatments will be: 1) control (100% cattle manure); 2) cattle manure with 0.5 % waste kitchen oil (by volume) and 3) cattle manure with 1.0 % waste kitchen oil (by volume). Variables measured will include biogas production, methane and carbon dioxide compositions, manure characteristics, N, P, K, NH3, moisture content, volatile solids digestate concentration and electricity conductivity, as well as total bacteria, total methanogens, Methanosarcina, Methanosaeta.
