Abstract

In this research project we propose to translate into Portuguese the first hundred pages of the literary work called EIMI by Edward Estlin Cummings (1894-1962). EIMI is romance/travelogue in the form of a journal. It relates the journey of thirty-six days that Cummings held in Soviet Russia between May and June of 1931. We assume that while Cummings is celebrated and influential in the literary world as an avant-garde poet, his prose work has been unfairly overshadowed. We believe that a causative reason for Cummings's prose underestimation is that it has never been translated. We will guide our translation by a comprehensive research of the work - by a study of its formal, thematic, cultural and reception aspects. We will address questions such as: To what extent can we see and enjoy the social function of this work as a result of the alliance between its aesthetic quality and its journalistic content? How does the special linguistic development of EIMI play out in terms of the activation of the different artistic interests of the author in this book? Besides the translation itself, the research goals are: To conduct a literary analysis of EIMI, focusing on the relevance and implications of this analysis for our translation and translation studies; develop our own theory of translation (or metaphor for the process of translation) that works in conjunction with the translation process experienced during the project; to contribute to the dissemination of the Cummings' prose work to Lusophone communities and promote the research and understanding of the book; and to contribute to the discourse of translation studies, especially with regard to macro-structural investigations of the literary text.
