Abstract

Internal combustion engine also can be called by explosion engine. This denomination is technically wrong. Indeed, inside the combustion chamber occurs a controled burning with flame front and not a explosion of gases. We can call explosion a uncontroled burning without defined flame front and supersonic speed propagation. This explosion as also known as knock. This event should be avoid in internal combustion engines for bigger durability of motor and smaller pollutant rate emission from uncontroled burning. The knock occurs when some air-fuel mixture in the end of combustion get their temperature and pression high. This uncontroled burning of fuel generates characteristic noise and possibly mechanical damage, mainly in pistons, rings, valves and spark ignition. In this project, will be create a computational model to predict the knock occurency in the engine. This model will be based in Boretti works (2010). The validation of this model will be done with experimental results obtained in Instituto Mauá de Tecnologia. (AU)
