Abstract

Industrial development and the intense human activity expose the population to a new category of contaminants, emerging contaminants, among which stand out the flame retardants, such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). PBDEs are used to prevent fires in electronics, textile and automotive industries and in construction materials. These contaminants are stable in the environment and can accumulate in the aquatic food chain introducing deleterious effects on human health such as hepatotoxicity, neurotoxicity, immune and endocrine damages. The main routes of exposure include inhalation, dust ingestion and through diet (fish, meat and eggs, dairy products and vegetables). Scientific literature has shown several sample preparation methods for the determination of PBDEs in food. However, these procedures are tedious and require high consumption of solvents and samples. Based on the above considerations, the present study aims to develop and validate a method of analysis of the main congener of PBDEs in fish, chicken eggs and cow's milk samples by using microextraction packed sorbent (MEPS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). After the method development, it will be applied to evaluate the levels of PBDEs in several Brazilian food samples. In this sense, the results of this study will provide preliminary and unpublished data regarding PBDE levels in food consumed in Brazil.
