Abstract

Cachexia is a wasting syndrome defined by a continuous loss of skeletal muscle mass due to an imbalance between protein synthesis and degradation with or without body fat loss. Weight loss is the most prominent characteristic of cachexia and is strongly associated with mortality. Inflammation has a central role in CC and affects several organs, including adipose tissue in which CC increases lipolysis and secretion of inflammatory cytokines. Muscle is one of the most affected organs. CC generate an increase in muscle proteolysis and secretion of amino acids, a decrease in protein synthesis and development of insulin resistance. Intramuscular triacylglycerol represents an important energy source during prolonged exercise and exercise also increases muscle fatty acid uptake. Although fatty acid metabolism is extensively studied in tumours and adipose tissue, little is known about muscle fatty acid metabolism.The overall objective is to characterize the fatty acid profile and TAG content of muscle and perimysial adipocytes and to identify whether chronic endurance exercise alter muscle lipid profile and localization in CC patients.
