Abstract

Plants are used for medicinal purposes since ancient times. Natural compounds extracted from plants have been highlighted as important sources of new therapeutic agents, used in the treatment of several ills, especially neglected diseases, such as leishmaniosis, Chagas disease among others. In this aspect, several studies are directed to evaluation of biological activities of natural compounds from plants, as well as investigation of mechanism of action of potential bioactive compounds. In this context, this project aims the isolation, purification and structural identification and/or elucidation of compounds with antiparasitic activity (antileishmanial and trypanocidal) from extracts of leaves and branches of Nectandra oppositifolia Ness & Mart. (Lauraceae), specie still unknown in chemical point of view. Therefore, a phytochemical dereplication study will be conducted, followed by a bioactivity-guided fractionation, aiming the isolation and structural characterization of compounds present in the active extracts, which will be re-evaluated against those activities observed for crude extracts.
