Abstract

There is a constant search in the sports environment for resources that if used chronically and/or immediately before the competitions, will promote a greater capacity to produce and/or use energy during a physical effort. Photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) has been identified as a promising resource in this scenario, given its ability to optimize the aerobic energy production pathway, improve tissue perfusion and alleviate the pain and/or discomfort generated by the exercise. However, the effects of PBMT on the performance of activities with motor movements similar to those observed on the sports scene are controversial, its repercussions on muscular work during this type of effort are not described in the literature, as well as its influence on the aspects of central and peripheral muscle fatigue. Thus, the aim of the present study will be to investigate the effects of PBMT on parameters of muscular activity, time to exhaustion in a constant-load severe-intensity cycling, and central and peripheral aspects of muscle fatigue, verifying two doses of PBMT. For this, the volunteers will perform three constant-load severe-intensity cycling until exhaustion, at different days, preceded at each day by a dose of PBMT, 0 J (control) or 210 J or 315 J, randomly and double blinding selected. All the efforts will be performed with the monitoring of the kinetics of blood lactate concentrations and blood pH level, muscle electrical activity and muscle discomfort. Before and after the efforts, will also be executed supramaximal electrical stimulation of the femoral nerve, at rest and during maximal isometric voluntary contractions of the knee extensors of the dominant lower limb, associated with the monitoring of the strength level (Twitch interpolation technique) and features of muscle activation, in order to investigate, respectively, central and peripheral aspects of muscle fatigue.
