Abstract

Bone grafting has been extensively studied and used in dentistry, orthopedics and neurosurgery, in human and veterinary medicine. Autologous bone graft is the gold standard method, however, it has limitations such as donor site morbidity, iatrogenic fractures and availability for harvest. The demineralized bone matrix presents characteristics such as osteoinduction and osteoconduction, and can be stored for long periods, highlighting it as a promising bio-graft in the repair of bone defects. Due to the increasing demand for effective bone substitutes, availability of caprine bones and lack of studies, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the behavior of the caprine bone matrix demineralized as xenograft in rabbits. 30 adult New Zealand White Rabbits will be used. A 6mm proximal monocortical circular tibial bone defect will be created bilaterally. The left defect will be filled with caprine demineralized bone matrix and the right one will be the control. After 15, 30, 60, 90 and 120 days, 6 animals will be euthanized and evaluated by computerized helical microtomography, analyzing trabecular filling pattern, bone ingrowth, graft resorption rate and osseointegration.
