Abstract

Aflatoxins have a prominent role in the mycotoxins group, as they are the most toxic, preferring substrates such as maizeandpeanuts, with maize being the main source of carbohydrates used for animal nutrition in Brazil. In tropical countries, it is common to observe feed produced with inadequate bagging, transport and storage procedures. These facts, associated with high temperatures and humidity are the main causes of fungal growth and, consequently, the production of aflatoxins. Therefore, it is very important to understand the effects on the different stages of fish development and the ability to tolerate aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) during long term exposure. Studies have shown that some mycotoxins cause damage in several fish species, but until now, there are few studies about the effect of aflatoxins on fish reproduction. Regarding legislation, the maximum levels required by the regulatory agencies are not efficient, as they are the same for any type of animal and the absorption and metabolism of mycotoxins are different among the animal species. Therefore, there is an imminent need for this research, aiming to improve productivity and collaborate to establish adequate levels in Brazilian and worldwide legislation. The objective of this project is to study the influence of dietary chronic exposure to aflatoxins on reproductive parameters in lambari fish (Astyanaxaltiparanae), also evaluating the progeny.
