Abstract

The main goal of the project is to develop a portable high sensitivity semiconductor transistor device for the diagnosis of human visceral leishmaniasis, a highly fatal parasitic infection, affecting mainly tropical countries. Early diagnosis is essential to prevent patient death. The chip will be based on the immobilization of synthetic peptides made from epitopes of Leishmania infantum, covalently bound into polymer gels. This will be the core of the sensitivity detection. Several complementary approaches will be used to characterize the transistors, mainly x-ray and electron microscopy, both performed in national facilities. Finally, the chips will be tested and validated through comparison with well-established diagnostic procedures (which are however time-consuming and expensive for broad use). The development of the diagnosis will involve complementary expertise from the different team members.
