Abstract

Polynitrosated polyesters may be used for the surface coating of blood-contacting medical devices, including ventricular assist devices (VAD) and intracoronary stents, in order to reduce their thrombogenicity. The objectives of the present project are: (1) the preparation of blends of polysulfhydrylated polyester (PSPE) with poly(L- lactic acid) (PLLA) and poly(caprolactone) (PCL) by spin coating onto test samples of polyurethane VAD; (2) the S-nitrosation of the coated films onto the test samples, to obtain coatings capable of releasing NO thermally after contact with the aqueous medium and (3) the characterization of the kinetics of NO release form the coated VAD, by chemiluminescence.
