Abstract

Cold-Water Immersion (CWI) is a traditional method used to speed up the muscle recovery after intense efforts. However, some investigations have associated the acute effect of CWI with possible deleterious effects on muscle adaptations and recovery when performed during long periods of training. Thus, the aim of the present study is to evaluate the impact of 5 weeks of CWI application associated with High-Intensity Interval Training in Decreasing configuration (HIITD) on intramuscular content of myogenic regulation factors (MyoD and Myogenin), markers of satellite cell activity (Galectin), mitochondrial biogenesis inducing protein (Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha, PGC1-±), maximum oxygen uptake and running performance. Two independent groups of 10 moderately active volunteers will be submitted to a Pre assessment (countermovement jump [CMJ], maximum incremental test and rectangular test until exhaustion), 5 weeks of HIITD and a post assessment (identical to the Pre assessment). Immediately after the HIITD sessions will be performed or no the CWI sessions (experimental group [11 min at 11°C] and control group, respectively). CMJ will be performed prior all training sessions for the muscle function assessment. Muscle biopsies will be performed prior the Pre assessment and after 5 weeks of training to analyze the intramuscular content of MyoD, Myogenin, Galectin and PGC1-±. For the statistical analysis, a two-way analysis of variance will be used to compare groups and moments. (AU)
