Salivary cytokine profile of children from aggressive periodontitis families

Abstract

Aggressive periodontitis is a relatively rare, rapidly progressing disease affecting adolescents and young adults. It causes rapid vertical loss of the supporting alveolar bone, resulting in the appearance of generally deep infra-bony pouches. The etiology is related to a group of bacteria of high virulence besides genetic compromise in certain families, increasing the occurrence of the disease in descendants of affected individuals. Studies involving children of PAG individuals were performed and identified early clinical and microbiological changes in these individuals suggesting the presence of factors that would favor the development of the disease. Therefore, the present study aims to analyze the inflammatory pattern of saliva in children aged 6 to 12 years from parents with generalized aggressive periodontitis (n=20) and children from parent with periodontal health (n=20), evaluating the salivary pattern of the inflammatory response, in an age and gender matched study. Data from the enzyme-linked immunoassay will be compared using the Shapiro-Wilk test to verify the normality of the data. If the data were normal, the comparison of the levels of cytokines (IL-1beta, IFN-gamma, IL-10, IL-4, IL-17 e TNF-alpha) between the groups will be performed through the t-Student test. If the data are not normal, the Mann-Whitney test will be used to compare the levels between the two groups. All tests will be performed considering a significance level of 5%.
