Abstract

All existing diet assessment methods are subject to measurement errors. One of the main and most recurring measurement errors of the diet is in the inaccurate reporting of energy intake. Although several procedures are used to estimate under-reporting of energy intake, the most accurate is Double-Labeled Water (DLW). DLW is the most accurate method of measuring total energy expenditure in individuals outside of confinement and is used as the gold standard to validate the reported energy intake. GloboDiet is a standardized and computerized methodology that allows conducting the 24-hour food recall interview (R24h), guided by a standardized script to reduce errors and ensure high standardization of collection. Brazil was one of the countries selected to start the software adaptation project for Latin America. Objective: To estimate the measurement error associated to the use of the GloboDiet platform by means of a validation study using doubly labeled water as a biomarker of energy intake. Methodology: The study will be conducted at the Center for Clinical and Epidemiological Research at USP University Hospital, which hosts the Longitudinal Study of Adult Health (ELSA-Brasil) in São Paulo. Four R24h will be collected on non-consecutive days of 100 participants (previously selected) from the São Paulo center of the ELSA-Brasil study, two face-to-face and two by telephone. Data entry is done on GloboDiet, simultaneously with the interview. Participants will also use double-labeled water as a biomarker of energy intake. (AU)
