Abstract The mandibular Complete Denture (CD) is frequent target of complaint of patients due to insufficient retention and stability, causing discomfort, masticatory and speech limitation of their users. These aspects direct influence the quality of life, important parameter for evaluation the success of prosthetic treatment. The advent of implant-retained prosthetic treatment allowed a significant improvement in the conditions of retention and stability of the mandibular CD. In this context, in mid-nineties, it was proposed the simplified treatment with overdenture retained by single implant in the mandibular symphysis region (SIO). In this context, there isn't any information in the scientific literature about the impact that SIO can provide on swallowing threshold and speech in the edentulous elderly, as well as, the perception of these patients in relation to the posterior rotational movement of PT and SIO. Therefore, this study has the aim to compare swallowing threshold, satisfaction with speech, mandibular prostheses posterior rotational movement and speech, as phonoarticulation characteristics, mandibular movement pattern, and pronunciation freeway space of the elderly rehabilitated, initially, with CDs, and posteriorly, with SIOs. For this research, will be selected 18 volunteers over age of 60 years users of both CDs. Initially, it will be done all evaluations with users wearing old CDs (baseline). Then, new maxillaries and mandibles CDs will be make. After the adaptation and two months of using the new prostheses, all the variables will be measured (T0). In the next step, the same volunteers will be submitted of the installation of single implant in the mandible midline area. After the osseointegration period, the mandibular CDs will be transformed into overdentures. All variables will be evaluated again two months after the overdentures installation (T1). The results collected will be submitted to statistical analysis using the appropriate tests. (AU) | |
