Association of omega-3 fatty acids with survival, tumor recurrence and mortality in women with breast cancer

Abstract

Breast cancer (BC) is the malignant neoplasm that most affects women in the world and is responsible for the highest mortality rate in this population. It is possible that there is a relationship between the consumption of food sources of omega-3 fatty acids (n-3) and the progression of BC- Recent studies relate the highest consumption of n-3 with the lowest incidence of this cancer. However, there is still little evidence to link the consumption of this fatty acid with outcomes related to recurrence, survival, and mortality. It is then proposed to evaluate the association between n-3 fatty acids, tumor recurrence, and mortality in women survivors of BC. This is a research project included in the Cohort "Obesity and breast cancer: Assessment of risk factors associated with excess weight and tissue adipose "performed with women treated at the Hospital Geral de Fortaleza (HGF -Fortaleza, CE) between 2011 and 2012. A socioeconomic profile and clinical history were collected, anthropometric data and blood collection of women diagnosed with BC(Case Group; n = 100) and without any type of neoplasia (Control Group; n = 100). In between 2018 and 2019, a search of the medical records of the participants was carried out in order to identify the following outcomes: relapse, new tumor, and vital status. To assess the fatty acids of the omega-3 series in both groups will be carried out a methodology of measurement through gas chromatography through the erythrocyte membrane of individuals. All statistical tests will be carried out with the aid of the program Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ® (SPSS), version 20.0 (SPSS Incorporation,2010). The significance value considered will be p & lt; 0.05.
