Association between periodontitis and head and neck cancer: a clinical investigation

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the association between periodontitis and head and neck neoplasia, from a clinical perspective, before and after oncologic treatment, as well as to investigate the impact of periodontitis in the quality of life of the oncologic patient. A hundred patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer, both gender, e 18 years attending at the Dental Clinics for Assistance of the Oncologic Patient at School of Dentistry at Bauru. Participants will be assigned to two groups according to the phase of oncologic treatment: 1) T1- before the initiation of oncologic treatment and 2) after oncologic treatment. Control group will be composed by 50 age- and gender-paired, systemically healthy participants. All participants will answear a quality of life health questionnaire (OHIP-14) to investigate the impact of periodontits in the quality of life. Participants will be periodontally examined according to probing depth (PD), clinical attachment loss (CAL), bleeding on probing (%BOP) and plaque (%Pl). Bone loss will be investigated in periapical X-ray images at the worst site. Prognosis will be determined according to periodontal risk assessment test. Periodontitis will be determined according to the criteria suggested by the current classification of periodontal and peri-implant diseases and conditions. The results obtained will be analyzed by ANOVA post hoc Tukey for parametric variables, Kruskal Wallis post hoc Dunn for non-parametric variables and bivariate analysis, adopting at all tests 5% significance level.
