Abstract

This journalistic research will be carried out as part of the actions of the Center for Applied Research in Artificial Intelligence Recreating Environments (IARA), supported by the São Paulo State Research Support Foundation (FAPESP) in partnership with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation ( MCTI) and with the Internet Steering Committee (GCI.br). , under the coordination of researcher André Carlos Ponce de Leon Ferreira de Carvalho. Formed by a multidisciplinary team, with experts internationally recognized for their skills in the areas of artificial intelligence, telecommunications, internet of things and smart cities, the Center is based at the Institute of Mathematical and Computing Sciences (ICMC) at USP, in São Carlos, comprising a network of researchers located in universities in all regions of Brazil, in addition to having partnerships with foreign companies and institutions. The initiative's mission is to transform environments, at different technological and social levels, through technological tools combined with social policies, so that they benefit the population. A medium and long-term process, which requires planning, data collection, monitoring and decision-making, starting with identifying the level of maturity of each location, considering its conditions in economic, environmental, socio-cultural terms and its institutional capabilities. The Scientific Journalism-1 fellows who will work with IARA aim to explain, through short videos, how people can benefit from the transformation of a city into a smart one, showing examples of the use of technology in improving infrastructure, services and living conditions of the population. Scientific concepts will be presented in an uncomplicated way, in order to expand public knowledge about technological impacts, contributing to the debate regarding the responsible, ethical, fair and transparent use of artificial intelligence models.
