Abstract

Microbial biobanks are relevant infrastructures for research and technological development. The exploration of microbiological material contained in biobanks with collections from different biomes, unusual and/or extreme environments, can enhance the discovery of new biomolecules and move the bioeconomy in different socioeconomic sectors. Considering the current demands and advances related to the availability and quality of biological material and associated data (BMaD), researchers from the biobanks CRM-UNESP, CFA/ITAL and LECOM-IO/USP located at São Paulo state combined their expertise and, together with researchers working in the areas of biotechnology, taxonomy/diversity, bioinformatics, and information technology, built the MicroBioBank project proposal. The project is divided into three main strands (Quality and Preservation, Research with the microbiological material, and R&D in informatics), whose activities are aligned with the following United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to be achieved by 2030: Advances in Disease Treatment and Improved Food Production. Conducting the project will allow the establishment of a network of researchers with an interactive and complementary workflow that is conducive to the discovery of new biomolecules with application in the areas of health and agribusiness. The results will also make it possible to advance in the improvement of the safeguard and quality of microbiological material (microorganisms, omics, and associated information), as well as in the public availability of data. The advances related to the BMaD organization and informatization can be used by other microbial biobanks maintained in research institutions in the state of São Paulo and Brazil. (AU)
