Metabolism, nutritional, requirements and carcass traits of growing goats

Abstract

During animal development countless metabolic reactions take place, they are mediated and influenced by a wild range of factors that have not been well studied in goats, mainly in their different growth phases. These events will especially affect body and consequently the animal nutritional requirements, as well as their carcass traits. Therefore, the aim of this study is determine the maintenance and growth nutritional requirements for male, castrate and female Saanen kids, in 3 growth phases, as well as, evaluate the effect of sex and feed restriction on body composition, animal metabolism, performance, carcass traits, and nutrient efficiency utilization in goats. It will be used 282 Saanen animals, as such: 96 males, 96 females and 90 castrates were distributed into 3 experiments according to body weight (BW) of the animals (experiment 1: from 5 to 15 kg BW, experiment 2: from 15 to 30 kg PC, experiment 3: from 30 to 45 kg PC). At the beginning of each experiment 6 animals of each sex (male, female and castrate) will be based on the amount of food intake by animals ad libitum fed. The technique of comparative slaughter will be used for determining the nutritional requirements. Blood samples will be taken weekly from the animals of experiment 1 and fortnightly from those of experiments 2 and 3 for analyzing metabolic, hormones and minerals. Samples will also be taken for methane determination, and samples of feces and urines will be used in to determine nitrogen balance, as well as, energy partition. (AU)
