Abstract
A ship in condition for almost immediate use would be purchased to replace the current vessel. We should note that this option has been adopted by the Brazilian Navy in recent cases of acquisition of their ships. The advantage of this option is that the vessel can be used in about six months. The disadvantages are the need for an upfront cash payment and the need to transfer funds abroad. For the second option, an offer has been made for the immediate purchase of the RV Moana Wave. This vessel, with larger dimensions than that the RV Prof. W. Besnard, has been offered at an approximate price of US$ 7,050,000.The Moana Wave is an oceanographic research vessel that was originally built for the University of Hawaii and was acquired and remodelled by the Stabbert Maritime Company in 2000. It has been maintained in excellent condition since then. It presents a displacement of 972 tons, length of 210 feet and beam of 36 feet. The vessel is already equipped with oceanographic research labs, requiring only a refurbishment in the cabins and installation of equipment to become the most modern oceanographic Brazilian civil vessel, with a capacity of twenty-one researchers. The ship has been offered with a set of spare parts and would be subjected to a five-year inspection by the Classification Society before its sale to the University of São Paulo. The ship would come with a set of scientific equipment that will elevate Brazilian oceanographic research to levels equivalent to those obtained by the most important institutions worldwide, namely: 1. Single-beam echo sounders: Scientific echo sounder, with echo integrator, frequencies from 38/120/200 kHz, Simrad EK-60 or similar; Hydrographic echo sounder, 12/38 kHz, Kongsberg EA-600 or similar; Net-sounder, Furuno CN-24 or similar 2. Multi-beam echo sounder Reson Seabat 8160 or 71113. Thermosalinograph Seabird SBE-45 and temperature remote sensor SBE-384. ADCPs RDI Ocean Surveyor 75 kHz RDI Ocean Surveyor 150 kHz5. Motion sensor Kongsberg MRU-2 or similar 6. Meteorological station (wind sensors, temperature, moisture, atmospheric pressure and solar radiation), Coastal Environment Weather Pack or similar7. Sub-bottom profiling Knudsen Chirp 3204 or 3260, with transducers of 3.5 and 12 kHz8. Dynamic positioning system L3 NMS6000 or equivalent9. Mechanical winch, with 5000 m of cable10. Electromechanical winch, with 5000 m of cable11. Different types of laboratories: wet, electronic, and chemical. (AU)
