Influence of zinc supplementation on cardiac remodeling after myocardial infarction

Abstract

Heart failure is responsible by great number of hospitalization around the world. The main causes of heart failure are myocardium ischemia and hypertension. Considering the ischemic alterations, myocardial infarction play a critical role. After myocardial infarction, can occur complex alterations of the ventricular geometry, involving both infarcted and non infarcted regions. In the last years, this process is studied as cardiac remodeling. Importantly, remodeling process is associated with poor outcome and development of cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. Therefore, strategies to attenuate the remodeling process are a priority. Zinc is a metal essential to enzymes activity such as angiotensin converting enzyme, superoxide dismutases, and mettaloproteinases. In addition, this metal plays a critical role in the membrane, DNA, RNA, and ribossomes structure. Recently, there are evidences that zinc concentration is decreased in heart failure. This reduction can induce oxidative stress, inflammation and metaloproteinas activation. However, the effects of zinc supplementation after myocardial infarction are unknown. (AU)
