Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases are the major cause of death in the world and it is estimated that, in 2030, they will be responsible for approximately 23.6 million deaths. Among cardiovascular diseases, we can highlight acute coronary syndromes, especially acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Heart failure is a frequent complication after the AMI and several factors influence its development, one of these factors is cardiac remodeling. The increase oxidative stress and inflammation process are associated with cardiac remodeling after the AMI. Due to the great economic and social impact and the high mortality rates, it is important to identify other factors that attenuate cardiac remodeling process. Among these factors are the food supplementation with antioxidant properties, such as tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), and one of its primary constituents, lycopene. However, the tomato and lycopene influence on cardiac remodeling after the AMI has not been studied yet. Our objective is to evaluate the influence of tomato and lycopene supplementation on the cardiac remodeling after acute myocardial infarction, regarding morphofunctional variables, oxidative stress, inflammatory process and microRNAs.
