Abstract
The hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) are responsible for generating all cells of hematopoietic tissue. Concerning leukemias, mutations that affect the control of proliferation and differentiation of HSCs can cause this kind of cancer. It was postulated that leukemia is originated by mutations in HSCs generating leukemic stem cells (LSCs) maintaining some features such as quiescence and undifferentiated immunophenotype. Extracellular ATP, which acts by activation of P2 receptors, was able to induce differentiation of HSC. This capability is being explored against LSCs. Furthermore, another group of molecules known as antimicrobial peptides has also demonstrated its cytotoxic ability against leukemias. The purpose of this project is to continue with our studies investigating the action of extracellular ATP and antimicrobial peptides against CTL. (AU)
