Abstract

Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is a grain highly appreciated around the world and has high economic importance. It is grown in over 100 countries and is the fourth most produced oilseed in the world. Noteworthy because it contains fatty acids and essential amino acids, good ratio of unsaturated and saturated fatty acids and vitamins. Is also a source of phenolic compounds such as stilbenes, flavonoids and phenolic acids, as well as tocopherols, all known to have antioxidant activity. Therefore, these features make the peanut an important food to be included in the diet, in order to prevent chronic diseases, which, in most cases, are correlated with oxidative stress. In Brazil, and in order to meet the demand of farmers located in the northeastern backlands, most populous semi-arid region of the world, Embrapa established a peanut breeding program, focusing on developing of early cultivars, productive and adapted to drought. Thus, the aim of this study is to investigate the chemical composition and the ability to deactivation of reactive oxygen species of peanut cultivars improved by Embrapa for the biome of northeastern Brazil, specifically the backcountry region in order to understand if there is a relation between tolerance to water stress and antioxidant activity and phenolic composition of the grains of these new cultivars. This is also very important, as there is in the literature any study on the ROS deactivation and bioactive chemical composition of grains of Brazilian peanut cultivars on water stress. (AU)
