Virtual reality simulation in the nursing teaching of peripheral venous puncture for intravenous therapy and blood collection

Abstract

The objective in this study is to develop a virtual reality simulator in teaching peripheral venipuncture for intravenous therapy and blood collection to nursing students, as a pedagogical strategy. The study will be developed in five phases. Phase 1- Identify which strategies and Technologies are used in teaching peripheral venipuncture for intravenous therapy registered in the literature. Phase 2: Construction of virtual reality simulator- in accordance with the reference framework of Wattanasoontorn et al. (2013). Phase 3: Face, content and criterion validation. Two groups of subjects will validate the software: group 1 consisting of experts in the research area and theme and group 2 of nursing students. Phase 4: Pilot study - After group 2 (nursing students) has participated in the simulator, the students' performance will be assessed using an observation script of the peripheral venipuncture procedure and blood collection. Phase 5: quasi-experimental study - After the pilot study, the adjustments needed in the simulator will be made and a quasi-experiment will be executed with a time series design without control group to test the simulator. For the data analysis, descriptive statistics will be used with frequency, percentage and correlation analysis. The software will be considered validated, setting a 70% agreement level between the aspects of the semistructured tool answered by the experts and nursing students (GRANT, DAVIS, 1997; POLIT, BECK, HUNGLER, 2011). In the quasi-experimental phase, the Shapiro-Wilk test, Student's paired t-test and the One-Way Anova test for repeated measures will be used. (AU)
