Abstract

This project will foster an independently funded collaboration between laboratories of Dr. Thushan de Silva and Dr. Beate Kampmann at Imperial College London and Dr. Helder Nakaya's group (FCF-USP) at USP. By applying a cutting edge systems biology approach to integrate nasopharyngeal microbiome, mucosal and blood transcriptome, immunological and clinical data, we will identify and investigate the putative role of long noncoding RNAs (IncRNAs) in vaccine-induced mucosal immunity. The exchange visits for data analysis/discussion sections, as well as the lectures/seminars and the workshop offered will provide the framework to spark the interaction between the groups. We will combine the expertise from Nakaya laboratory at USP and the data being generated via a clinical trial of LAIV (Live attenuted influenza vaccine) in children aged 24 - 59 months conducted at the MRC Unit the Gambia. Also, close links established during this proposal will enable Brazilian research to benefit from the well- established global health research network maintained by professor Kampmann, which includes the Centre for International Child Health (CICH) at Imperial College London recently established under her directorship.
