Abstract

One of the strategies recommended to control the progression of dental erosion of intrinsic origin refers to the neutralization of the hydrochloric acid that reaches the oral cavity through emesis episodes. In this context, one can hypothesized that neutralizing oral suspensions (antiacids) could provide such alkalinization. Owing to the lack of scientific basis to support the prescription of those products, this in vitro study will be carried out to evaluate whether neutralizing oral suspensions would control dental erosion caused by hydrochloric acid. Slabs from bovine enamel (3 x 3 x 2 mm) will be embedded, flattened, polished and subjected to baseline Knoop microhardness (KHN) measurements. After reference areas will be created with adhesive tape, specimens (n = 15) will be exposed to an acidic challenge using a 0.01 M hydrochloric acid aqueous solution (pH 2, for 2 minutes). Afterwards, suspensions containing magnesium hydroxide and/or aluminum hydroxide, sodium alginate + sodium bicarbonate + calcium carbonate or hydrated aluminum-magnesium sulfate will be applied on enamel surface. Specimens will be stored in artificial saliva for 24 hours and will be subjected to four sequences of erosion followed by the application of the respective suspensions. For the control groups, the same procedures will be employed, except for the fact that no suspensions will be applied on enamel. At the end of the experimental period, profilometric traces will be performed to measure the wear depth (µm). In addition, final Knoop microhardness measurements will be made. After data will be subjected to descriptive analysis and whether the assumptions of homoscedasticity and normality will be met, inferential statistical methods will be applied. (AU)
