Abstract

Beta-lactamases-producing enterobacteria are a worldwide problem, observed mainly in the last two decades with the pandemic of beta-lactamases CTX-M and most recently the dissemination of KPC and emergence of NDM carbapenemases. In Brazil, few studies report with detail the molecular epidemiology of bacterial strains prevalent and/or epidemic plasmids that are involved in the spread of resistance. In this context, the aim of this project is to investigate K. pneumoniae isolates and plasmids carrying beta-lactamases encoding genes in the northeast region of São Paulo State - Brazil. Thus, isolates of broad-spectrum beta-lactam-resistant K. pneumoniae will be investigated. Beta-lactamases encoding genes will be investigated, especially those commonly carried by plasmids. The bacterial strains will be defined considering the macrorestriction profile by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis and, according to the sequence type, by Multilocus Sequence Typing. The characterization of plasmids will be accomplished by typing of incompatibility groups and hybridization. This knowledge will be fundamental in near future since new strategies can be formulated to control antibiotic resistance, more incisive and effective, directly in the chain of resistance genes spread.
