Abstract

The study of complex networks has been drawing much attention over the last years, especially because of its potential to characterize the most diverse systems through the same mathematical and computational tools. Since not much time ago the emphasis on this field was mostly the effects of the structural properties on the global behavior of a dynamic process taking place on the system. Recently some studies started to unveil the richness of interactions that occurs between groups of nodes when we look to the small scale of interactions occurring on the network. Inserted in this context are the community network models that make possible the systematic study of the relation between modular structure and dynamics on complex systems. Having this in mind we approach a problem that was given little consideration on the literature, which is the influence of the modular structure on the modularity of the dynamics, that is, what are the conditions that we need to impose on the structure to create differentiation between groups of nodes on the network. We pretend to define a measurement that quantifies such differentiation when considering four distinct dynamics: random walk, integrate-and-fire, epidemic and Kuramoto oscillators on a series of different random networks models as well as a number of real world networks. We also propose to go further and study the same phenomenon when considering direction between the interactions between the elements composing the system. (AU)
