Abstract

The main of this project is to incorporate metronidazole and silver nanoparticles on natural rubber latex (NRL) membrane. The solutions of latex and drugs/nanoparticles will be polymerized at different temperatures, in order to control the membrane morphology. The number, size and distribution of pores in NRL membranes vary depending on polymerization temperature, as well as its overall morphology. The release rate of metronidazole and nanoparticles will be monitored and quantified using optical spectroscopy (UV-VIS). These membranes are characterized by various techniques, including infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) for the monitoring of the membrane formation and characterization of substances. The results will be analyzed from the perspective of understanding the interaction of drug/nanoparticles on natural latex membrane. The choice of metronidazole (MET) for this project is due to the fact that it is widely used in periodontal diseases, while the nanoparticle silver is an antibacterial used to control microorganisms and infections prevention. In addition, natural latex has been proven excellent for its biocompatibility and ability to stimulate angiogenesis. Moreover, it can be used as a carrier these substances (drug + nanoparticles).
