Abstract

The auditory temporal processing is considered key element to speech sound perception, and may be associated to language, speech and reading development. Therefore, the knowledge of the mechanisms involved with temporal processing is essential, as well as the development of temporal processing evaluation tools. A few tests were already developed to assess temporal sequencing and resolution, however, to the assessment of temporal integration and masking there are no feasible and standardized tests. This project, which will be held in partnership with the Neuroaudiology Laboratory of the University of Connecticut, intends to start a series of studies related to the temporal masking with the development of a behavioral test to evaluate this auditory ability. The test will be applied to individuals with neurological abnormalities verified by image exams, in order to obtain high rates of sensitivity and specificity. Also, test responses will be standardized for adults without hearing and neurologic complaints. After this study, we expect that the developed test will be incorporated to the clinical battery of auditory processing assessment, and in subsequent studies involving children and teenagers, with and without language, speech and reading problems, and also in studies comparing behavioral and neurophysiological responses.
