Abstract

The dyes are responsible for the movement of billions of dollars each year through the production of millions of tons, concerning from the standpoint of environment and health of the exposed population, since an estimated 15 % of world production of dyes loss to the aquatic environment during the synthesis, processing and their application. Published studies on the mutagenic and genotoxic samples containing dyes and pigments coming from tannery wastewater and surface related water do not identify the exact chemical compounds responsible for these activities. The present study aims to evaluate the occurrence and toxicity of dyes in tannery wastewater and surface related water, in order to obtain subsidies to better understand the mechanisms of toxic effects on genetic material as well as their environmental transport processes. The study will be realized by genetic toxicology assays, including the mutagenicity assays with Salmonella and comet assay in HepG2 and fibloblastos human skin. The presence of dyes in environmental samples will be determined by LC / MS in collaboration with the Institute of Chemistry, UNESP, Araraquara-SP. With the results of this project will be possible to perform the preliminary assessment of the risk of the release of these compounds in the aquatic environment.
