Abstract

Salmonellosis is a zoonosis of worldwide importance and one of the most common foodborne diseases. Salmonella spp. are often associated with poultry, since those animals are reservoirs of this pathogen. The characterization of foodborne pathogens has been changing, especially in epidemiological studies where molecular typing methods are used. These methods have optimized the identification and characterization of pathogenic bacteria with high discrimination power. These methods have also provided the mapping of pathogens in the food chain once they enable the comparison between isolates and their ancestors. The molecular characterization and knowledge of diversity among strains make possible to evaluate the impact of the pathogen in the production chain and devise strategies to eradicate it. Thus, it is extremely important to understand the genotypic diversity of Salmonella isolates so that actions can be taken to control the pathogen in the poultry production chain. In this sense, this project proposes to carry out the phenotypic characterization and investigate the genetic diversity of Salmonella enterica serotype Enteritidis, Typhimurium and Infantis isolated in poultry slaughterhouses situated in the southern and southeastern areas in Brazil. This work will generate information on the main phenotypic and genotypic characteristics, besides the differences between strains of Salmonella Enteritidis, Typhimurium and Infantis, in addition to characterizing the spread of antimicrobial resistance genes and virulence among isolates.
