Abstract

Nowadays one of the biggest challenges in clinical practices is to find a cheap treatment, less invasive and suitable for bone defects caused by accidents or bone deficiencies. The guided bone regeneration technique is an interesting method that acts by cell selectivity principle, setting apart bone cells and tissue cells by the implantation of a membrane that acts as a physical barrier. Therefore, the greatest scientific challenge for this technique is to find the ideal membrane. In this research project, natural rubber latex is the membrane employed. This choice comes from its characteristics of biocompatibility, natural stimulus for angiogenesis, being currently employed as material for prostheses and medical grafts. Besides that, latex membranes have the capacity of incorporate and liberate bioactives composites during the healing process. So, in the natural rubber latex membranes will be incorporated biphasic calcium phosphate, a combination of two phases from calcium phosphates, currently being largely employed in repairing bone defects showing characteristics of bone-induction and bone repair. A potentiation in the bone repair effects from the biomaterial is expected. The release rate from the biphasic calcium phosphate will be detected by optical spectroscopy (UV-VIS) using the indicator Eriochrome Black T and the Ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) as colorimetric method. Eriochrome Black T is blue but in the presence of Calcium ions it becomes red. These membranes will be characterized by several techniques including scanning electron microscopy, mechanical resistance test, FTIR and X-ray diffraction.
