Abstract

This project aims to analyze the presence of novels in the Imperial Library and in personal documents of the Brazilian Imperial Family. The corpus of this research consists in the list of novels of the Teresa Cristina Collection of the National Library Foundation, the manuscript catalogue of the books that belonged to the Empress Teresa Cristina and in the documents, letters and diaries left by the Brazilian Imperial Family and that are part of the collection of the Imperial Museum of Petrópolis. The list of books that belonged to the Russian Imperial Family, and that are part of the Library of Congress of the United States, will be used as a source of comparison between the Imperial Library and other noble 19th-century library. Manuals about the composition of libraries and criticisms published in the press in the 19th century will also be used to analyses the Imperial Library, and to help to understand the canonicity of the novels that were part of the Brazilian Imperial Library. These comparisons, as well as the analysis of the presence of novels in documents of the Brazilian Imperial Family and of the main languages, places of publication and authors in the Imperial Library and in the list of books that belonged to the Empress Teresa Cristina can bring important information about the circulation of novels in the 19th century and about the reading practices of the Imperial Family.
