Abstract

Brazil is one of the top 15 countries in what regards aquaculture production. Additional expansion of activity requires studies focusing on the replacement of dietary animal protein sources, especially fish meal (FM), the main protein source in aquafeeds, by vegetable protein sources, more abundant, less expensive and sustainable. The inclusion of plant protein sources in aquaculture diets is limited by the presence of anti-nutritional factors (ANF), which hamper the absorption of nutrients and may compromise the intestinal epithelium and health, especially of carnivorous fish. Vegetal protein sources can be better utilized after accessory processing aiming at inactivation of ANF and decreasing lipids and carbohydrates levels, resulting in protein concentrates such as the soy protein concentrate (SPC), yielded by accessory processing of soybean meal (SBM). Research efforts in this area usualy evaluate growth performance of animals, leaving behind physiological factors and health. This project targets a concomitant analysis of growth, expression of food ingestion-related genes, intestinal histology and isotopic study of the contribution of dietary protein sources (FM versus SPC) to muscle deposition in pacu and dourado juveniles, native Characins important for aquaculture and fisheries alike, respectively an omnivorous and a carnivorous species. Results of the study should contribute to the determination of dietary levels of CM and SPC that are advantageous from the production point of view, taking into consideration the health and welfare of fish.
