Abstract

The cosmetics industry is one of the most important segments of the worlds economy. In the cosmetics sector, the innovations are incessant and are much related to the development of new products. Considering the current scenario in which the care and conservation of the skin is sought, it can be clearly seen that the segment involving the preventive treatment of the skin or the preparations with anti-aging potential present a strong growth tendency. Phenolic acids are some of the substances that constitute the group of phenolic compounds and have antioxidant properties, which function as radical scavengers and sometimes as metal chelators acting both in the initiation stage and in the propagation of the oxidative process. Vanillic acid is one of the representatives of this group and is characterized by its potential use as antioxidant and antimicrobial. Emulsions, primarily O/W, are widely used in the cosmetic segment as systems for the release of active substances and have advantages such as greater ease of spreading, possible enhancement of penetration, absorption and consequently the activity of the components. However, the use of vanillic acid in cosmetic preparations is not much explored since few studies have shown its efficacy and safety in preparations intended for topical application. Due to the need of knowledge of the behavior of this active when incorporated in a delivery system, this project has as main objective the attainment of the in vitro permeation profile of vanillic acid from an emulsion.
