Abstract

Aim: i. to estimate psychometric properties of Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire-18 (TFEQ-18) and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) applied in Brazilian university students, ii. to verify relationship among negative affectivity (core concept of depression, anxiety, stress) and eating behavior of this students iii. to compare functional performance and body composition in university students with extreme scores of eating behavior, stress and anxiety. Methods: This study shall take place in two stages. Stage 1: screening of eating behavior, depression, anxiety and stress in the students. Also it will be investigate the relationship among negative affectivity and eating behavior's aspects to this sample. Stage 2: recruitment of individuals with extreme scores of eating behavior and stress/anxiety in order to evaluate their functional performance and body composition. In Stage 1, there should be from 495 to 990 participants, students enrolled at a public university. Eating behavior and depression/anxiety/stress shall be investigated using TFEQ-18 and DASS-21, respectively. The instruments' psychometric characteristics shall be evaluated by confirmatory factorial analysis (CFA). Factorial, convergent, discriminant validity and reliability shall be estimated. After adjusting the models for the data, they will be test structural models, considering negative affectivity as independent variable and Cognitive Restraint, Uncontrolled Eating, Emotional Eating as dependents variables. The mean scores for each factor of each instrument shall be calculated to then screen for extreme scores for Cognitive Restraint, Uncontrolled Eating, Emotional Eating, Stress and Anxiety. Scores shall be considered extreme if they are below the 25 (P25) or above the 75 (P75) percentiles of the response scale for each factor of each instrument. Cross tables shall be constructed between extreme scores for factors of the TFEQ-18 and the DASS-21 in order to define the sample to be recruited for Stage 2. Those individuals who agree to participate shall complete the TFEQ-18 and the DASS-21 again, to confirm their scores. Functional performance (functional neurometry) and body composition (bioimpedance) will be evaluated. The minimum sample size (Stage 2) will be calculated following a pilot study evaluating 5 individuals from each group. Means obtained for each variable (evaluated in functional performance and body composition) will be compared between the groups using Analysis of Variance. Significant variables will be included in the multiple regression model as independent variables and the factors of the TFEQ-18 (cognitive restraint, emotional eating and uncontrolled eating) will be considered dependent variables.
