Effect of different citric candies on dental enamel wear in vitro

Abstract

This in vitro work has as aim to evaluate the erosive potential of citrus candies on bovine enamel samples with respect to the quantification of wear. For this, 90 bovine tooth crowns will be embedded, polished and submitted to the initial contact profile analysis. Thereafter, the samples, will be protected in 2/3 of the surface and randomly distributed in 6 groups (n = 15): Group 1 - Fini Licorice Acid Tubes tutti-frutti flavor (malic acid, citric acid); Group 2 - Fini Chicle Fruit Salad (malic acid); Group 3 - Fini Gelatine Kisses strawberry flavor (citric acid and lactic acid); Group 4 - Fini Diet (lactic acid and citric acid, without sugar); Group 5 - Coke soft drink(pH 2.6); Group 6 - 0.1% citric acid solution (research group standard, pH 2.5). The candies will be dissolved in water in the following proportion: 40 g/250 ml deionized water. The pH of the solutions will be measured. The enamel samples will be submitted to pH cycling for 7 days, consisting of 4 daily immersion cycles for 90 s each. Among the erosive challenges, the samples will be immersed in artificial saliva. The final contact profile will be obtained. The initial and final profiles will be superimposed for the calculation of wear (¼m). The data will be submitted to normality and homogeneity tests, in order to choose the most appropriate parametric or non-parametric statistical test, for comparison between groups (p <0.05).
