Abstract

According to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) biopsychosocial model, functionality is the result of the dynamic relationship between the conditions of integrity of body structures and functions, the ability to perform activities and performance in participation, as well as by influences of contextual factors. Thus, for planning general interventions (clinical, environmental, social) it is important to understand how contextual factors and health/disease conditions and system deficiencies can impact functional capacities and restrict or facilitate social participation. Thus, the aim of the present study is to map the biopsychosocial determinants that may influence the participation at home, school and community of children and adolescents with Down Syndrome (DS). Participate in this study children and adolescents with DS, aged 6 to 17 years, and their guardians. Participation will be assessed by the Participation and Environment Measure - Children and Youth (PEM-CY) instrument (part: 'participation'). The ability to perform activities by functional mobility testing (TUG) and use of accelerometer to identify the level of physical activity. Personal factors will be gender, age and personality characteristics obtained through the Skills and Difficulties Questionnaire. Environmental factors will be assessed by the PEM-CY (part: 'environment'), Social Support Scale, About My Child-19 and semi-structured interview protocol on sociodemographic data. Body structures and functions will be evaluated using spatiotemporal and angular variables during the TUG test. Descriptive results will be given according to the normality pattern of the obtained scores. Correlation tests and multiple linear regression will be performed, with adopted significance level of 5% (± = 0.05). By identifying these aspects, it will be possible to elaborate intervention strategies that favor the social participation of these individuals. (AU)
