Abstract

In this project, we intend to study the action of mirsinoic acid, a compound with potential antimicrobial and antitumor activity, with Langmuir films of phospholipids, which will serve as cell membrane models. The phospholipids to be used will be dipalmitoylphosphatidyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and dipalmitoyl phosphatidyl serine (DPPS), which will be co-spread with the bioactive. The interaction of the bioactive with the lipid monolayers will be evaluated through measurements of pressure isotherms and surface potential, Brewster angle microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and surface rheology. The results will be evaluated from the perspective of possible biological implications, inferred from the effects caused by the bioactive on artificial membranes.
