Abstract

Osteoporosis is an illness that is frequently encountered by dental surgeons in the clinic, and is caused by disequilibrium between processes of bone tissue formation and absorption. With the increasing life expectancy of the global population, more researchers are focusing on geriatrics, in order to provide the population with a healthier aging process. Individuals with osteoporosis are susceptible to both long bone and hip fractures, and dento-alveolar trauma. Considering the shortage of literature in the study of dento-alveolar trauma in individuals with osteoporosis, the aim of this study was to analyze the repair process in immediate dental replanting and its possible association with this systemic alteration (osteoporosis). A well-established experimental model, recommended by the FDA, was used for this analysis, i.e. ovariectomy (OVX) in rats. The project consists of two experimental groups: group I; sham rats, and group II; OVX rats, submitted to exodontia and dental replantation. Evaluation will be done by histomorphometric analysis, to verify and measure external radicular resorption 7 and 15 days post-surgery. (AU)
