Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação (Brasil). Centro Nacional de Pesquisa em Energia e Materiais (CNPEM) (Institutional affiliation from the last research proposal) Birthplace: Brazil
Researcher in the fields of biotechnology, biocatalysis, and synthetic biology. His work focuses on the discovery and molecular elucidation of the genomic dark matter of microbial life from Brazilian biodiversity, as well as the development of microbial biofactories for the production of enzymes and other bioproducts, which, when combined, have the potential to revolutionize biotechnology. He coordinates institutional interdisciplinary scientific programs to address strategic national challenges in bioenergy and biorenewables, as well as large-scale RD projects in partnership with biotechnology companies. Discoveries from these studies have led to paradigm shifts in biotechnology, with results published in journals such as Nature, Nature Chemical Biology, and Nature Communications. The biotechnological platforms developed in these institutional programs are being validated at large scale, including pilot plant and field experiments, and are being customized through collaborations with the private sector.Since 2008 at CNPEM, he has coordinated major scientific facilities, including the MX1 and MX2 beamlines for Macromolecular Crystallography at LNLS and LNBio, and the ROBOLAB facility for macromolecular crystallization. He has also held leadership roles such as Coordinator of the Molecular Division at CTBE (20162017), Scientific Director of LNBR (20182025), and is currently Executive Director of LNBR. He has served on the National Technical Biosafety Commission (CTNBio) since 2021, currently holding the position of Vice President since September 2024 and Coordinator of the Animal Subsector since February 2025.In recognition of his scientific contributions and support for innovation in biotechnology, he was elected an Affiliate Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (2020present) and received the EMBRAPII Outstanding Researcher Award, selected among more than 15,000 researchers in the EMBRAPII network.
