Abstract

In the vast majority of countries, diseases of the cardiovascular system account for the highest number of deaths. This project aims to develop an Apex-Aortic Blood Pump (BSAA) to be used as a Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) in patients with severe heart disease or waiting for a heart transplant. In Brazil, access to this technology is difficult and costly. The imported devices cost 1 million reais. The estimated final cost of this device will be around 150 thousand reais, enabling its use, whether in the Brazilian public or private system. An implantable blood pump developed in Brazil will make it possible to disseminate this technology in medical centers that perform cardiac surgeries. A new version of the BSAA designed to maintain the characteristics of the original model to the maximum was developed with a radial magnetic flow catalog motor, facilitating a magnetic-hydraulic levitation, which caused the lower bearing of the rotor to suffer less wear, the BSAA be used in long-term therapies. The first prototypes of the new version of BSAA were built by 3D printing at the Center for Circulatory Assistance Engineering (CEAC) of the Bioengineering Division of the Adib Jatene Foundation (FAJ) using the Connex 350® printer (Stratasys®, Eden Prairie, USA) and the results of the in vitro tests were satisfactory and proved the technical feasibility of the production of the BSAA DAV.
